Capitals in your content – PLEASE STOP!

Sussex copywriting

Is it just me or are capital letters slipping into all sorts of the wrong places?

I’m afraid I’m going to have a little rant about the inappropriate use of capital letters in online or print based copy. It seems like there is currently a bit of a capital letter epidemic with people either USING CAPITALS FOR EMPHASIS or worse still, Adding a Capital Letter at the Beginning of all Major Words in a Sentence. So, if you are tempted to try one of these techniques, here are 4 reasons why you should think again:

1. Copy written in all uppercase is slower if not harder to read than lower case, so if you really want your readers to read your compelling content, make it as easy as possible for them.

2. A capital at the beginning of every word is grammatically wrong. Enough said.

3. If you are having to resort to tricks of this nature to give your writing emphasis, then your words are not working hard enough. Go back and re-write.

4. Frankly, it’s rude and irritating. If you write entirely in upper case, it is the equivalent of shouting. I’m not yet deaf.

Rant over. But please, please get some medical assistance if you feel yourself coming down with a nasty case of capitalisation.
